Call to Community Partners: Become a Founding Member
Friends,As you know, momentum has built quickly exploring the concept
and benefits of a regional hut-to-hut trail system of land and waterway
routes for self-propelled travel throughout the Shuswap. The idea of
creating a longer regional trail system gathered further momentum with
the proposed 5 Rings Trail strategy aimed at linking five distinct ecological
regions along the Okanagan-Shuswap mountain trench. Initial consultation
between stakeholders began last November, with considerable interest
expressed throughout the region during public community consultation
sessions in April and May.
The idea of a system of nature-based routes presents significant new
opportunities for active recreation, environmental stewardship, partnership
amongst communities, and a new kind of sustainable economic opportunity
based on presence within the natural world. It also presents challenges
that will take creativity and community resolve to overcome.
A regional steering group has been working to develop this concept and
put shape to a council of endorsing partners that will guide the initiative
into the next stage of planning.
It is now time to formalize this alliance of regional partners
in support of hut and trail development throughout the Shuswap.
By creating a forum of partners – First Nations leadership, recreational
trail societies, tourism operators and organizations, local government,
businesses, environmental stewards, provincial ministries and members
of our land resource industry – we build a new kind of cooperative
accountability. We are also able to more effectively leverage and manage
funds, share knowledge, and guide the next stages of trail and hut development
in the region.
On behalf of the steering cluster, I invite your organization
to formally support the Shuswap Hut and Trail Alliance as an advising
partner and founding member.
Founding Members: As a founding member, your
organization formally joins the Shuswap Hut and Trail Alliance as a
corporate member and advising partner in good standing for 2006. Founding
corporate members appoint a representative to the Alliance Advisory
and exercise full voting privileges within the hut and trail alliance.
Founding corporate members are requested to provide a general
letter of endorsement to the hut-to-hut trail initiative and contribute
$50 to the start-up account, and where possible, to make either a financial
or in-kind commitment to support further project development. (In-kind
commitments to date have included access to meeting space, photocopying
services, use of trail building tools and equipment, mapping consultation,
professional services and building materials.)
Endorsing Partners: In the event your organization
is not able to formally join the alliance as a corporate member at this
time, it is critical you remain at the table. You are invited to support
the initiative as an Endorsing Partner. Endorsing Partners are asked
to provide a general letter of endorsement to the hut-to-hut trail initiative,
and where possible, to make either a financial or in-kind commitment
to support further project development. Endorsing Partners are invited
to join the Alliance Advisory, but would not hold voting privileges
at general meetings.
We look forward to your reply and the opportunity to work together.
Please be sure to contact us for more information as we step forward
in the realization of this regional vision, and let us know if we can
come and make a presentation to your board or council members.
Sincerely,Phil McIntyre-Paul
